Wonderful Carlos Acosta
Wonderful Carlos Acosta
A quick trip to Birmingham yesterday to see Carlos Acosta on the farewell tour he has organised with other dancers from Cuba. What a sensational dancer he still is, and what a loss to the performing arts his retirement has been. Still he has many plans for the future, including building a new school for the the Cuban National Ballet.
We arrrived just as they were announding the three minute warning to take our seats, having had a fairly long and tedious journey from the Bookery. How I would like to be the person who is not always running in at the end!
I bought some quite interesting books at auction this week ,so if I can ever get through my backlog, they should hit the shelves eventually. Some wonderful art books, including a number of unusual titles on Henry Moore.
Speaking of art we had a very successful day in the map exhibition, with our biggest group of sales since the opening. There are still many beautiful maps left for sale however, and don't forget the exhibition is open until the 15th of May. Still available for purchase is a very nice John Speed map of Herefordshire from the 1627 edition, and a copy of Samuel Simpson's rare map of Herefordshire from the end of the 18th century. There are also a number of beautiful maps of Radnorshire and Shropshire available and incredibly one of the strip maps has not sold yet. We have had something of a rush of visitors following the double page spread in the Shropshire Star this week, and I hoping for a busy weekend, as people who went away for the Bank Holiday have their first chance to view the exhibition.
Meanwhile Private View cards have arrived for Shropshire Hills Art Week which starts on the 4th of June, and we are still taking bookings for the May Brocante, which should be our biggest ever.
