Exhibition; George Butterworth; random culture
A second sculpture sold from our 'Paper Wraps Stone' exhibition, and it was moving to hear the purchasers describe the place they had earmarked for it in their home. This exhibition is one that has made demands on those who have viewed it, but several people have said to me that it has been the best exhibition that Aardvark has ever mounted. Many many thanks to Michael and Lottie for allowing us the opportunity to show their work.
This morning I met with Wayne Smith the author of 'The Drovers Roads of the Middle Marches' an unexpected hit for Logaston Press, which has now been reprinted several times. For some years Wayne has had a project to make George Butterworth - the early twentieth century composer and collector of folk materials - better known to a contemporary audience. Next month he is republishing the collection of Butterworth's materials that was privately published by Butterworth's father, after George's untimely death in the first world war. Aardvark is working on an evening event to mark the book's publication in June, so keep an eye on the website for details. 'The Drovers Roads' is always in stock at Aardvark, and is a must for anybody interested in the agricultural history of the area.
Meanwhile last year's Brampton Bryan debutante Jordi Savall goes from strenghth to strength, and is described in this week's New Yorker magazine as early music's only true superstar. Amazing what a little Brampton Bryan stardust can do for a fellow!
Best record I have bought this year is 'The Wanderings of the Avener', by the eponymous French producer and DJ. A truly wonderful listen if you like either popular music or jazz. On the subject of jazz, this year's Brecon programme is now out, and bookings can be made on their website.
Bookings are coming in thick and fast for the May Brocante ( 25th May ), so if you want a stall please let us know. Pitches cost a meagre £8, and there is an additional £3 charge if you want to hire a table.
Although we are now getting quite full there are still pitches available at the 8th Mortimer Country Food Fair on the 11th of July. Please contact us if you are a food producer or craftsperson and would like a stall.
Finally next week is London Bookfair; look out for an important announcement on Wednesday!
