Civil War Weekend Awaits
The doors have just opened and we are welcoming the first visitors to the 2017 Civil War Sieges, organised by Ethel and Arthur in conjunction with the English Civil War Society. This year's event looks like it will be bigger than ever, with an even larger contingent of re-enactors, a larger castle, and new features specially for this year.
In the summers of 1643 and 1644 the castle of Brampton Bryan was besieged by a large detachment of Royalists who had marched up from Herefore. In the first siege the castle was stoutly defended by Lady Brilliana Harley the wife of the owner Sir Robert Harley, and after a period of stalemate the Royalists withdrew to lick their wounds.
Sadly in 1644 they returned and eventually the defenders were forced to surrender, the younger Harley children being subsequently imprisoned in Ludlow Castle.
There are activities throughout the day - and a large Living History Village - with the two sieges taking place just aftet Midday and at 3.30pm.
