So Long Peter O'Toole
So Long Peter O'Toole
News came through this morning of the death of Peter O'Toole. That he made it into his eighties seems incredible, not just because of the tales of his carousing, but more because of the way in which his performances burned as a young man. In Lawrence, or The Ruling Classes he seemed to possess an almost superhuman life force. Surely - we think when we watch him - such a being is not meant for the mean compromises of old age. And yet some of the best O'Toole performances came towards the end of his life. As Jeffrey Bernard, and before that playing an amalgam of himself and Erroll Flynn in My Favourite Year. Best of all we had his writing. Loitering with Intent would be a special book whoever had written it, but the fact that its author was O'Toole makes it perhaps the best book on the trials of starting out as an actor ever written.
For any-one wanting a memento of O'Toole we currently have in quite a nice copy of the first Public edition of 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom'. A wonderful book that links together two great mercurial talents.
