Wigmore Abbey, Poobahs, Leonard Cohen
Last week we received our copies of 'Wigmore Abbey: the Treasure of the Mortimers' a new book that explores Wigmore Abbey the house that has been restored and cherished by John and Carol Challis over many years. The book has wonderful photographs by Alex Ramsay, the ridiculously distinguished architectural and landscape photographer.
Last night we ran in to Alex at a party at Burton Court ( a wonderful house that houses twice yearly Antiques Fairs - 'Antiques in Tents ' - amongst other activities). Alex's talent is matched only by his modesty, and it was fascinating to hear how he he gone repeatedly to the house over a period of a year, matching the different views to seasonal light and conditions. The book is available at £30 and if you were able to come next Saturday for our Winter Event you could purchase it at the special price of £25! A bargain.
Speaking of 'The Winter Event' I am very much looking forward to hearing the Brian Lammas Trio again. Brian was a great hit at the opening of the 'Take Five' exhibition in the summer and he brings a lifetime of musical loves and passions to his playing.
Also at the party last night the musical accompaniment was provided by the Poobahs Dave Luke's brilliant roots band who have played many times at Aardvark. Will definitely be booking them again in 2017. Speaking of 2017 we are starting to finalise or plans for next year. If you would like to hold an exhibition or event here please let us know.
Finally such sad news to hear of the death of Leonard Cohen. So many tributes from such a wide group of people ( who would have known that Russell Crowe was such a sensitive man). I was first played LC by my sister when I was in my early teens, and his songs have remained with me. Much covered, always distinctive and inimitable, a poet and a troubadour, a questing, travelling man. His message to his great love Marianne Ihlen who died last July, made me weep at the time and seems now like a clear-eyed prediction. Cohen new the difference between sentiment and pure emotion. Both have their place in our lives. but only one endures. So long Leonard. We will miss you, for we shall not see your like again.
