May madness
May madness
One of the strange aspects of being a bookseller is that you go through periods when few, if any books of interest are offered, and then other periods when every day brings another purchase. This has a somewhat concertina-ish impact on our bank balance, and also means that the shop sometimes has to expand to fit in even more of its owners' enthusiastic purchases.
This morning's email brought news of three delectable parcels of books to buy, and in the last week alone I have bought three other book collections and had another given to me as a donation. And what interesting books! A complete set of the New Naturalist in very good to fine condition - including the Monographs. Wonderful books on the birds of the world. A small library on theosophy and colour theory. More Penguins - including some unusual 1950's green Penguins (books not birds). Art books - including books on British artists - wonderful post-war architecture books ('Build a house for £500-£2,500'). And ahead of our monster sale in July we are still working through the books that have been in the warehouse for some years, including the many thousands that came in during the pandemic.
And our May madness continues with another car book/flea market at the weekend. This one will have quite a few stalls that differ from our offering at the beginning of May - including the 'Cottage Herbery' who were double-booked last time by the sadly far more important Hergest plant sale.
The last few days have been so perfect that we have all been pinching ourselves and commenting on how lucky we are to live in such a stunning part of the world. This mornings grey and damp skies brought us all down with a bump, but hopefully things will brighten again soon.
In the meantime let me wish you a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend (we all need every cheer we can get, given the hell-in-a-handcart state of the world). Come see us soon and help mitigate the effects of my book buying compulsion by taking a few away with you, for the most modest of considerations.
